Language placement test

A language placement test is used to determine the most appropriate level of language study for you. If you've had any previous experience with the language you want to study, even if you think it might not be relevant or was too long ago, you need to sit a placement test.

Relevant past experience include:

  • Previous study of the language
  • Being exposed to the language in childhood
  • Travel or living in a country where the language is spoken
  • The language being spoken in your home (even if you don’t speak it)

For placement into language programs beginning in 2024, please note the following:

Ancient Greek and Latin

Students who are beginners or have limited prior engagement with the relevant language (e.g. a one-week summer course), should begin their study with GREK1001: Introductory Ancient Greek or LATN1001: Introductory Latin.

Students who have completed Year 12 or equivalent study in the the relevant language should enrol in GREK3125: Advanced Ancient Greek or LATN3125: Advanced Latin.

If your previous study falls between these two levels, please contact Assoc Prof Caillan Davenport to discuss appropriate placement.

French, German, Italian and Spanish

Entry into the French, German Italian and Spanish programs requires a placement test and will be subject to approval from the program convener. To register your interest in taking an on-line placement test, please send an email including your student ID number to SLLL administration: admin.hal@anu.edu.au

Russian

Most students begin their study of Russian with Reading Russian for Academic Purposes I (RUSS1003/6002). If you have prior experience with the language, please contact the Russian convenor, Dr Ksenia Gnevsheva, to discuss appropriate placement.
